Born in the Bay area of California, Jon Vancura's first musical memory is a dim lit smoky garage where his father, uncles and grandfather had a family rock and motown cover band. as a young child, Jon moved to Portland, Oregon, where he began piano and guitar lessons at age 9.
It wasn't until high school when Jon began taking music seriously, after being accepted into an arts based school with an intense music program. Under the direction of Portland jazz music icon Thara Memory, Jon began studying Jazz saxophone and flute, as well as exploring singing and songwriting in spare time.
While at art school, Jon was able to travel around the world with the schools nationally recognized jazz band, including Lincoln center, Monterey Jazz festival, Reno Jazz Festival, Vancouver Wine and Jazz Festival, and Mt hood Jazz Festival.
After high school, Jon spent two years with a full scholarship to MHCC, where Jon really began playing professionally.
A number of musicals, bar gigs, session dates, festivals and private events later, Jon VanCura is now a member of "The Kinky Brothers" "SoulTicket" "The Soul Tribe" and leads his own project under his own name.
